I hate the sense of helplessness that overwhelms me when I see a loved one suffering and there is nothing I can do to bring some comfort or relief to the situation because circumstances are beyond my control and, in some cases, helping may even make matters worse.
That's the most probable, although unconscious, motivation for me to purchase a starving, skin-and-bones Mandarin fish today.
The least we could do was to rescue her from the terrible state she was in and give her a fighting chance to survive. And if she does survive, we would have saved a life.
