Shape, Money and Clothes

I was chatting with Baby Sis and we were lamenting over our shape, or lack of it, when it occurred to us that...

When we were young we had no shape, and no money.

Those were the days when we were skinny as a rake and we only had one new dress a year that was sewn for us by our paternal grandmother. We had no say in the choice of material nor the design of the dress.

There was a year when she bought a lovely rose pink material and she sewed us dresses with lace on the bodice. I really loved that dress and my memory of it remains as fresh as if it is still hanging in my wardrobe.

Unfortunately we weren't always so fortunate. There was a year when she sewed us dresses from a piece of ugly, brown cloth. I hated the colour and, to make things worse, the cloth was very scratchy.

Those were the two dresses I remembered out of the many that she sewed for us over the years when we were growing up - the one I loved most and the one I hated most.

In those days we hardly ever bought clothes. Most of the time we wore hand-me-downs that friends and relatives gave us which our mother would send for alterations before we could wear them.

As we grew older, we had the shape, but no money.

We filled up as we grew older even though we were still on the skinny side. That made it very easy for us to buy clothes and to look good in them. However, money was still tight because we were starting in our careers and our pay was low. Moreover, being a sandwich generation, we had to care for both our children and our parents.

Now that we are in our golden years we have the money but no shape.

Our parents have passed on and our children are already working, except for my nephew. We are now able to indulge ourselves but, unfortunately, we have lost our shape. The pendulum has swung from being too skinny to being too fat. And all in the wrong places. :(

We used to wear S, XS or even XXS size but now we have to request for L, XL or XXL size. To make matters worse, some of the clothes are imported from Korea and China where people are really tiny. To our chagrin, there are countless occasions when there isn't a size big enough for us to fit in!

Of course, we can always have our clothes tailored but one thing I've learnt through the years is that dress-makers often fail to deliver. The beautiful dress I picture in my head seldom ever materializes at the hands of the dress-maker.

So why, oh why, is it always a no-win situation for me when it comes to clothes?

I'm A Glam-Mother!

Friends have been asking me how life as a grandmother is like. I really don't know how to answer that question because I have not done any grandmotherly things other than buying my grandson clothes, socks, shoes and a bib!

Baby clothes are so cute. Just take a look at this...

or this.

Aren't they simply irresistible?

Okay! That's enough gushing over baby clothes.

The reason for my lack of opportunity to do any grandmotherly stuff is mainly because our times with our grandson are much too few and far between. Those precious moments are spent enjoying him, watching him, adoring him and trying to commit as much of him to memory as we possibly can.

At our age there is only that much we can commit to memory and so I thank God for the iPhone. Hubby and I cannot take enough photos or videos of him. It sounds so silly but I review his photos and videos on a daily basis! People looking at me will see a crazy woman smiling and gazing adoringly at her phone but happy is the day and happy is the heart of this grandmother whenever I receive new updated photos or videos of our Grandson.

Photos and videos are really no substitute for having our little prince, our champ, our No. 1 (grandson that is; must qualify or my 'Bee will be offended that someone has usurped her position in my heart) with us but the photos and especially the videos, are better than nothing.

So what do I do since I am not tied down by by any grandmotherly duties? Why not be a Glam-Mother instead!

Believe it or not, these photos were taken the day my grandson was born!
On the day Grandson was born, which happened to be a Sunday, we visited 'Bee before we went to church. After church we were told that she was already in the delivery suite. No visitors were allowed so we went home and waited.

When there was still no news in the late afternoon I decided to keep the appointment for a makeup and photoshoot session I had registered for. I was prepared to rush off half-way if necessary but Grandson took his time and so I managed to complete the whole session.

Looks like I'm meant to be a Glam-Mother! But you know what, I would trade all the glamour for more time doing grandmotherly stuff with Grandson. He is growing up so fast. I hope he knows he has a Kung Kung and Por Por who love him very, very much even though we are not around to watch him grow.

Purple-ly Planned

Hubby chose to wear a purple shirt today and so, to accompany him, I decided to wear a purple dress as well.

Here are the two of us purple-ly colour-coordinated for today.

The raisin and the grape

Hubby said that I'm a grape (so plump and juicy) and he's a raisin (err...I'll leave that for you to interpret).

Nyonya Sunday 29 January 2012

We were supposed to wear kebayas to church next Sunday but Alyna requested that we all wear kebayas today instead because her daughter Deriss is going back college in Kampar today. And so some of us did.

From L to R: Deriss, Serena our Pastor's wife. Emma, Alyna and me. Missing: Evangeline and Doris.

Backfire

I planned a surprise for Vive but it backfired on me.

So here we are...

...an Indian dressed in China man baju and me in a saree

How was I to know that he was thinking of dressing cross-culturally as well? Anyway, this was 1Malaysia and muhibbah demonstrated at John Loh and Hui Min's wedding dinner.

I think I should wear the saree more often

Cheongsam Night

Last Saturday was our ex-neighbour's son's wedding. The dress code for the wedding dinner was 'Traditional' so we obediently put on our cheongsams.

In our traditional best

It was a shame that few of the guests bothered with the dress code. Which goes to show that trying to impose a dress code is a pretty pointless exercise. At least in Penang.

I was very impressed by the couple's ability to enjoy the moment despite the embarrassment of forgetting the guest list and having their guests stand outside the hall for almost an hour. In the end they simply declared free seating for all, apologized for the boo-boo and carried on with the evening.

Some couples could have easily allowed this problem to spoil their big night but all I saw were happy smiles on their faces. I salute you Ee Keong & wife!

Dressing for the Weather

It was cloudy this morning when I was picking clothes for the day so I opted for something warm. Then, while I was having breakfast the sun came out and it became unbearably hot. Now it's all cloudy again. Even the weather is indecisive!

I really don't know how to dress for such freaky weather. Sometimes I end up sweltering in warm clothes on a hot day. At other times I end up shivering in skimpy clothes on a cold day. All because of the changing weather.

The best solution would be to layer my clothes. Pile on the layers when the weather gets cooler and remove the layers as the weather gets warmer.

I would never imagine having to go through so much trouble living in the tropics.

Clothes For Health

The other day hubby and I were at our favourite Malay tomyam stall for lunch. There were a number of Malay ladies there and all of them were obese. Hubby looked at them and commented that their clothes (baju kurung) were so shapeless that it was no wonder that they allowed themselves to get fat. They could get away with it!

Actually his observation is so true. Shapeless or loose clothes allow us to cover up our unsightly bulges so we happily pile on the weight and all the while we are endangering our health. But when you put on a pretty dress that shows off a less-than-perfect figure that'll trigger off alarm bells that, hey, you're on the slippery slope to obesity. The last straw that'll break a fully padded back is when someone asks you, "Are you pregnant?" That's when you know you're out of control.

So ladies, let's invest in some nice form fitting clothes - for our health's sake if not for vanity's sake! Haha!

But having said all that, exercising is easier said then done which is why most of us resort to the big cover up and let things slide. Sigh.

Eve of Chap Goh Meh in Church

Today is the eve of Chap Goh Meh. A few of the ladies in the church decided to turn up in kebayas. Just for fun 'cos it's not every day that we get to play dress up.

I like this pink kebaya. The colour is so sweet.
It's my mom's.

Golden Shoes

Pam and I bought golden shoes for CNY. Actually by the time we made our purchase it was already the second day of CNY but it doesn't matter 'cos CNY lasts 15 days.

My pretty golden shoes

As any woman with a new pair of pretty shoes would understand, I contrived to dress appropriately so I could wear the golden shoes on my first day at work. That's how I ended up with another kebaya day yesterday!

A yellow kebaya inherited from my mother-in-law to match my golden shoes

I think I am getting hooked on kebayas even though I am literally bursting out of them!

Nyonya In Church

It's the first Sunday of Chinese New Year. Time to reclaim our Nyonya heritage, albeit with much campur aduk and improvisation since I am now too fat to be able to bring the ends of the kebaya together to fix the kerongsang and it's too much bother to find a sarong to match.

Bursting out of my kebaya and "revealing" my camisole underneath

Kebaya held together with kerongsang and worn with pants

FYI this is a genuine kebaya handed down from my mother-in-law. My sis and I tried some of our mom's kebayas as well and we noticed the same thing. They are always too tight at the shoulders and chest but the waist would fit nicely. If the shoulders and chest fit nicely then there would be too much material left at the waist. Our conclusion is that women nowadays (or is it only us?) have broader shoulders. So unfeminine.
